Check your in-box!  E-mail invitations to the Sunday Feb. 7 Artists' Breakfast Group dinner have gone out to friends and members.  Jackie Moses is the heroine of the day for stepping up and organizing this event, perfect for everyone whose lives somehow "get in the way" of attending Wednesday morning breakfasts.

Michelle Stone has an installation in Pathways and Portals:  Art, Nature and Science, an exhibit now at the Illinois State Museum, 100 W. Randolph (Suite 2-100), until May 7.  The show was curated by Jane Stevens, and also includes paintings by James Mesple and work by a close relative of Michelle's.  Artists' opening:  Thursday, Feb. 11, 5-7:30 PM.  Gallery hours are M-F, 9-5.   http://www.museum.state.il.us/ismsites/chicago .

For the next year Joan Minsky will have paintings and sketches on display and for sale at the Lakeview Art Supply Store, corner of Lincoln and Melrose Avenues.  Some pieces are on the walls, while others are in drawers.

ARC Gallery is hosting the Chicago Women's Caucus for Art exhibit Off Center, a midwest regional show that is part of the National Women's Caucus for Art Confab being held in Chicago this year (Feb. 10-15).  The exhibit was juried by Aron Packer and Ann Rosen, and will include work by several of our members:  Laura Cerf-Dahl, Shelley Gilchrist, Sandra Holubow, Ruth Aizuss Migdal, Anita Miller, Joan Minsky, and Judith Roth.  The exhibit runs February 3-27, with an ARC Gallery reception on Feb. 5 (6-9PM), and a CWCA artists' reception on Feb. 12 (6-9PM).

Woman Made Gallery is hosting the national exhibit, From the Center:  NOW!, juried by Lucy Lippard and sponsored by the Women's Caucus for Art.  Even if you don't own any dog-eared copies of  Lippard's books (From the Center, The Pink Glass Swan, Eva Hesse, Mixed Blessings), this is an exhibit to see. Lippard has been paying attention to and writing about art made by women since the 1960's.  The WCA reception with the artists will be held February 12, 6-9PM.  The show is up now and runs through February 25. The College Art Association conference takes place Feb. 10-14 at the Hyatt Regency.  If you are not a member, it is possible to attend individual conference talks or the book and trade fair -  for a fee.  Check the website  http://conference.collegeart.org/2010/.  Some of the talks and panel discussions are hosted jointly by the CAA and the WCA and those are open to the public.

While you are making the round of openings on  Feb. 12, be sure to stop by Gallery 537 and Studio 470 in the  Fine Arts Building to see FUSED 2:  Art + Wax in Chicago, an exhibit of encaustic art by FusedChicago members.  Ken Gold and Shelley Gilchrist have work in the show.  Reception is 5-9PM, Feb. 12.  The show continues until March 8.

Several members have 2-D and 3-D work in the exhibit Transformations at the Aurora Public Art Commission David L. Pierce Art and History Center, 20 E. Downer Place in Aurora, Feb. 5 - May 21.  Shelley Gilchrist, Peter N. Gray, Alan Emerson Hicks, Ruyell Ho, Beth Kamhi, Jim MacRoberts, Bill Moll, Mimi Peterson, Robert Putnam, Eric H. Steele, and Michelle Stone.  The work in the exhibit incorporates discarded industrial materials from the urban culture and objects found in the natural environments.  Opening reception:  5-7:30 PM, Feb. 5.

A sad farewell to the Byron Roche Gallery in River North, which is closing its physical doors at the end of February.  After 16 years, Byron Roche's business is moving exclusively to cyberspace, and will continue to represent his artists on-line.  There will be a reception at the gallery Jan. 30, 11AM - 6PM, 750 N. Franklin.

Amanda Ross Ho has several large panels (12-1/2' x 50')  featured in Production Site:  The Artist's Studio Inside Out at the Museum of Contemporary Art.  The opening bash is Feb. 4 - tickets must be purchased - and the show runs through May 30.  Amanda will give a talk at the MCA auditorium on Feb. 6 at 3PM.  Her show at the Sullivan Gallery (SAIC) continues through Feb. 13.  Amanda's work can also be seen in several galleries:  Mitchell, Innes and Nash in New York, Cherry and Martin in Los Angeles, and now she also shows her work in London at the Approach Gallery.

Eric Holubow won first prize (2-D) for his photograph Doorway Maze at the Rockford Midwestern Biennial 2010 last week.  He had two pieces in the exhibit.  The Rockford show continues through April 25; see last week's post.

Make art, not war!  February 28 is the registration deadline for the Global Art Project for Peace.   There are participants on all the continents - groups and individuals (including children) can register.  During March, art is created; in April, it is displayed, shared and exchanged with others.  See the website for details:  www.globalartproject.org.

Health in the Arts Clinic at UIC is hosting an exhibit of work by Kathy Weaver, including  fiber pieces, drawings and lino blocks that reference art and technology. The show runs through April 9 at 835 S. Wolcott, # E144.

Marion Carow and Shelley Gilchrist have work in the National Art Premiere 2010 in the Elmhurst Artists' Guild Gallery at Elmhurst Art Museum, 150 Cottage Hill, Elmhurst.  The show runs January 30 through March 3, with opening reception on February 5, 7-9 PM.  Also see more work at www.mariancarow.com.

Members' news from the jaws/thaws of January

Arlene Rakoncay and Judith Roth encourage women and men artists in all media to apply to the Chicago Women's Caucus for Art exhibit Off Center, which will be held at ARC Gallery February 3-27.  Jurors are Ann Rosen and Aron Packer.  Deadline for sending images is Friday January 15th.  Artists whose work is admitted to the show must join the CWCA.  For more information, see the prospectus:  http://www.chicagowca.com/CWCA2010febprospectus.pdf. 

Congratulations to Beth Kamhi, whose ceramic sculpture took the 3-D first-place award in the 12th National Juried Art Exhibition at  Baker Arts Center in Liberal, Kansas.  Beth had three pieces in the show, which was juried by Chicago's own Dan Addington.  The show will be up through February 20.

An image of Sandra Holubow's piece, Urban Connections (photo collage with acrylic on canvas) was chosen for the Community Arts Assistance Program, 2010 Grant Application. You'll find it on the hard copy of the CAAP Grant application, available at the City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs, Cultural Grants Division, 78 East Washington St., Chicago. The electronic application (which does not have the cover art) is available at www.cityofchicago.org/CulturalGrants.

Shelley Gilchrist has a drawing in the national show Americas 2010 Paperworks Competition at Hartnett Gallery, Minot State University in Minot, ND.  The exhibit runs January 11-February 24.
