Carol Brookes Art

Open Studio

Saturday, July 20th

3 PM to 7 PM

1552 W. Carroll Avenue #210 - Chicago, IL 60607

6 - Surface Pulse 6a
SURFACE PULSE - "Pierce" - Sculptiing epoxy, bolt shanks, nuts, found hardware, wood, canvas, acrylic and spray paint - 22" x 22" x 8"

5 - Pulse Vector 5a
SURFACE PULSE - "Urchin" - Sculptiing epoxy, cut masonry nails, tacks, washers, wood, canvas, acrylic and spray paint - 22" x 22" x 8"
I am completing new works for my upcoming art exhibition "Carol Brookes - PULSE - Mixed Media Wall Sculpture" that will be on display at the Akus Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University from August 29th to October 10th. Please join me to preview these new artworks and many of the other works that will be included in this exhibition. Visit my new studio at 1552 W. Carroll Avenue #210 on July 20th from 3 - 7 PM and enjoy the art, food, wine and music.
The studio is located right off Ashland on Carroll Avenue . It is only two blocks from the Lake Street and Ashland Train Station and a half block from the Ashland Avenue bus stop. There is also plenty of free street parking. See Map.
2 - Pulse Vector 2
PULSE VECTOR - "Spokes" - Sculptiing epoxy, dowels, copper angles, hardware, wood, canvas, acrylic and spray paint - 22" x 22" x 8"
The Open Studio will feature two new groups of work, "Surface Pulse,"an installation made up of fifteen 22" squares, and "Pulse Vector," made up of four 22" squares, in addition to many other works that will be part of the Akus Gallery exhibition. All of these works are part of the "Pulse Series", an ongoing body of work that examines the hemisphere as a structure, the ordinary forms we see each day in their many incarnations, such as an egg, a pod, an eye, the earth, planets, and domes. The many concepts that these forms evoke are explored in the series, including thoughts and insights into life, birth, and the mystical and mysterious.
2 - Pul;se Vector 2
PULSE VECTOR - "Coil" - Sculptiing epoxy, flexible conduit, tube straps, hardware, wood, canvas, acrylic and spray paint - 22" x 22" x 8"
"Surface Pulse" ( shown above) is all about texture and unique materials. All the works in this group are shades of white and off white, with hemispheres placed in boxes of different depths. I consider this work my "free for all", my opportunity to experiment with all the ideas that have been floating around in my mind for the past two year.
"Pulse Vector" alters the hemisphere by cutting sections out of them. This creates new spacial movements. These works use hardware and sculpting techniques to create industrial looking works that appear to be machine-made.

meanwhile, back at the ranch: a must see.....
SOUNDCHECK: the portfolio suite

The Portfolio Suite Artists:

Christopher Blume (Rivals), Chris Flynn (Hyperbole Ensemble),
Michael Jackson (Heart, Head and Tails), Wyatt Grant (Pool Holograph),
Deborah Maris Lader (Sons of the Never Wrong),
Jon Langford, Alan Lerner (37 Questions),
Justin Santora & Jason S Thompson (The Sky We Scrape),
Maria Sanchez & Brandon Ross (The Glorious Vapors)

SOUNDCHECK aims to celebrate the work of Musician-Printmakers who actively and enthusiastically express themselves in multiple art forms. To pick careers in both music and art is not exactly the most lucrative choice, and yet, these artists strive for the highest standards in both of their chosen mediums. These art forms are related. The act of recording is an act of layering, as the rhythms are often tracked first, with layers and layers of instruments and vocals resting upon one another in a complex matrix of sound. So too are prints made, with layers of visual information entered upon stone or plate or screen in order to produce a rich and penetrating image.

The exhibition showcases a portfolio suite of prints made by 9 artists in an edition of 20. An accompanying CD of  9 songs (related to the artwork, recorded by each artist) is included in the packaging of the portfolio, which resembles a vinyl album cover, since the print size is 12 x 12 inches. 10 Portfolios are available
to the public for purchase, as well as individual proofs by each artist.

The exhibit shows the portfolio prints as well as additional print work by each of the participating artists. The portfolio features all methods of traditional printmaking: lithography, etching, screen printing, and relief. The music of the artists ranges from folk to jazz, rock and punk and everything in between.

Some of the Soundcheck Artists, L - R: Christopher Blume, Jon Langford, Megan Sterling,
Deborah Maris Lader, Michael Jackson, Alan Lerner, Brandon Ross.

Alan Lerner, "37 Questions"

Deborah Maris Lader, "Wholes"
