Call For Entries ART/TECH:interface at ARC in December

ART-Tech-from-word.jpg

INTERFACE: [N. IN-TER-FEYS; V. IN-TER-FEYS] 1. A COMMON BOUNDARY OR INTERCONNECTION BETWEEN SYSTEMS, EQUIPMENT, CONCEPTS, OR HUMAN BEINGS.

Juried by Jan Tichy
Technological advancements have expanded exponentially over the past several decades. This explosion has impacted all aspects of our lives and experiences from every day personal uses of technology, to developments in medicine effecting our survival, to new discoveries and changing perceptions of our universe and beyond.
The relevance to our culture is undeniable. It has altered and adjusted the way we interact, receive, interpret and share information. Has this changed our perceptions of what art is? How has this informed an artist’s perceptions, expressions, or interactions with the world and their art?
This juried exhibition invites artists to submit work that investigates, discusses, or is influenced by these issues. Submitted work can:
Address the issue of cultural impact as a concept Use technology as a medium for a creative concept Is directly informed by technology though might not necessarily use technology within the
artwork itself or as a sole means of expression. Focuses on how technology has altered artists’ perception of their vision and work
All media will be considered. Please read the sections on Submission Requirements / How to Submit Work, and Acceptance Requirements before beginning submission process.

ARC 40th Anniversery

Hi Everyone~

This is such a  groundbreaking event by a groundbreaking group of women - the founders and  members of one of the longest-running women-run feminist galleries in the country - the 40th Anniversary Exhibition/Celebration of ARC Gallery and Educational Foundation - of which I am honored and proud to be a member.

I have a favorite recent drawing in this show, see below, and  though I will be unable to attend the opening myself because of recent surgery (still plowing through the rehab and recovery!)  I hope you will try to make it there for the opening on 9/27 and /or to be there for the panel discussion on the 28th which should be a fascinating insight into the early years of the feminist movement and the gallery's own establishment, by some of its founding members!

Judith Roth

Editors note: Blogger Emeritus Nancy Charek  is also a part of this exhibit.

Chicago Artists Month

October 2013

Caffeine VII: Another Brew of Work from the Artists' Breakfast Group

Tuesday, October 8, 2013 to Thursday, October 31, 2013
The "Caffeine VII: Another Brew of Work from the Artists' Breakfast Group" exhibition comprises a portion of the Artists' Breakfast Group membership. Over forty artists participate in this exhibition. At the opening reception member artists will talk about their work, exchange ideas and techniques with fellow exhibitors and guests. The annual exhibition provides the opportunity to dialogue and connect with the Chicago neighborhoods through visual art.
We meet weekly at S & G Restaurant, 3000 N. Lincoln Ave on Wednesdays, 10 am to noon. Members form networks to share information about upcoming juried exhibits, attend exhibits together, visit each others studios, and go to each other's art openings. Each weekly meeting forms its own community, because at each meeting the mix changes and evolves. Another opportunity to meet is at the Sunday night dinners held at various restaurants about once every six weeks. The conversations are as diverse as the artists who attend the meetings and dinners, but all are professionals who have the opportunity to dialogue and connect with colleagues.
Our annual exhibit, The Caffeine Exhibit, further solidifies the group and helps familiarize each other with our work. Some artists traditionally exhibiting are: Didier Nolet, James Mesple, Judith Roth, George C. Clark, Peter Jones, Eric Steele, Ruyell Ho, and Jackie Moses. The Breakfast Group e-mail announcements are sent to the full membership list which totals over 90 people.
Our blog further disseminates information on members shows, awards, grants, and special achievements. http:artistsbreakfastgroup.blogspot.com/

Emily Rapport, My Webmeister...

Emily Rapport, my guru, my webmeister, is having an Open Studio, details below. I'm posting this because I love her artwork and because she's also a website designer and her services are extraordinary. I'm doing a bit of shameless advertising here for her.

She does my website, rounderstudio.com and here's her webwork website which is eatpaintstudio.com.
Damen Sunset, Emily Rapport, 10"x14", watercolor
Emily Rapport, artist, is having an open studio, here's her artist website. I picked "Damen Sunset" because I truly love Emily's feel for watercolor and because this is a scene that fills me with nostalgia for my hometown and for the Brown Line, one of the mellowest transit rides in the world.

Ravenswood Open Studio One Day Only… Saturday, September 14, 4pm – 9pm Featuring all new oil paintings by me PLUS work by studio mates Marion Kryczka, Amavong Panya and special guest artist Leo Kogan. Location is 4541 N. Ravenswood at Wilson, #403. Older works will be available and priced to sell. RSVP to our Facebook event here. Free to enjoy, close to Ravenswood Metra, Damen Brown Line and plenty of free parking.

Peter Jones at Woman Made Gallery

Michele with the Ayala Alter
'Michele Fitzsimmons at the Art Institute' is a collaboration of 3 artists across a span of 30 years. One summer afternoon in 1981 Michele Fitzsimmons and Diane Schmidt did a daring photo shoot in the galleries of the Art Institute for their groundbreaking book ‘The Chicago Exhibition’. Out of 72 images shot only three photographs were published. Thirty years later Michele thought there might be further images and stories in the unused shots. She worked with Peter Jones to produce a series of digital prints.

Our window back to that afternoon was two 20 x 24 contact sheets that contained all the images made in that intense, panicked, fun photo shoot. The digital prints in this exhibition are all out takes. In some, only minor corrections and cleaning were done. In others, the full force of Photoshop has been used to combine and remake images in the hope that some new light can be cast on that distant afternoon."
