Ken Gold Featured in Today's Chicago Tribune

Ken Gold, 55, became a certified animal representative with the American Humane Association 11 years ago, assigned to monitor films to ensure no harm comes to animals on a set. Gold has worked on more than 230 film productions, including "Marley & Me," "Contagion" and "Django Unchained."(Armando L. Sanchez, Photo for the Tribune)
Ken Gold was featured in today's Chicago Tribune for his "day job" as a certified animal representative with the American Humane Association. They did not mention his "real job" as an artist.

'"I always loved animals. … Initially, I was interested in exotics and how captivity affected them," said Gold, a primatologist whose early career focused primarily on monkeys and apes."

He got a master's degree in systematic and behavioral biology at San Francisco State University, where he studied under Dr. Hal Markowitz, one of the modern founders of a movement to improve the environment for zoo animals. In the 1990s, Gold worked as an animal behaviorist and assistant curator for the Lincoln Park Zoo, before moving abroad to become the general curator for Apenheul Primate Park in the Netherlands and the general curator at the Singapore Zoo.'

James Mesple, Icons, Myths & Poems at Jackson Junge

Opening Friday, January 18 at 6:00 pm at Jackson Junge Gallery, 1389 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60622

“Icons, Myths and Poems” is a solo exhibit of works by famed Chicago artist, James McNeill Mesplé. This exhibition of thirty-three paintings showcases work in a variety of forms, including oils, aqueous, and mixed media. Although the materials are diverse, the themes running through this body of work are ones that Mesplé has been incorporating into his figurative paintings for thirty years. Mesplé continues to find inspiration in mythological and religious icons, which he then recreates with clever ties to the modern day. Included in the exhibition are poems by Elise Paschen and Effie Mihopoulos.

Sandra Holubow Paintings Featured in Publications

City Core, Sandra Holubow, artist
City by Day, Sandra Holubow, artist

Paintings by Sandra Holubow chosen for the covers of two publications.

"Community by Day," a painting by Sandra Holubow, was chosen in a juried competition by Rush University Medical Center for the cover of their Discover Rush/Spring 2013 "Inspiration Issue." Holubow's winning entry will be printed in full color for the cover of their education/promotion mailer distributed nationally and internationally (usually to "current resident!")

"City Core," another painting by Sandra Holubow, was chosen by the Association for Jewish Studies for their full color book cover and page headers. Their meeting was held in Chicago for the first time, and Holubow's work was chosen for its "feeling of Chicago" rising up.

And if that wasn't enough Holubow news, Sandra wants you to check out the February issue of "Chicago Magazine," with the cover promo of Roger Ebert and "Chicago's Once Grand Movie Palaces." Inside, after Ebert's introduction, the article appears with text and photographs by Eric Holubow.

Fletcher Hayes is participating in a group show in Alabama right now through Feb. 2. It's a retrospective of a group of art-, music- and religious studies students who called themselves Raudelunas back in the 1970s. Here's a nice article on the Raudelunas Exposition 2013 in the Tuscaloosa News:

And here's another article that focuses more on the UA Art Department's relevance to the show

Memorial Chorale for Newtown

Dear Friend,

My friend composer Lita Grier was commissioned
to write a Missa Brevis in memory of the children
who were killed recently in Connecticut.

It will be the centerpiece of a choral concert
conducted by noted choral conductor Doreen
Rao at St. James Cathedral, just north
of the loop....this Sunday the 13th, at 5 PM.
The concert is free.

I attach the invite. I did the poster and invite.

This is going to be a rather special concert
as they are inviting several choral groups
from around the country, including Chicago's
William Ferris Chorale.

Hope you can come and maybe I will see you there.

Your good friend,

Robert

News from Didier Nolet

2012 was very good as far as creation goes. I developed some great large-scale oil on canvas landscapes (and some smaller ones). I also got involved in creating some outdoor projects including painting a five-foot acrylic peacock that was displayed all summer in Highland Park.

2013 will bring some exciting progress and new shows. I am presently still working on a series of 8-foot oil on canvas imaginary winter scenes that I will show all together at some point.

I am teaching painting and soft pastel as always. Teaching is one of my biggest projects. I call it "sharing knowledge." Classes start next week so if you haven't done it yet, there is still room in some of the classes. All are 10 week sessions.
